Meet Crafty Wee Birdie's makers - D Lish

Meet Debbie Mackenzie Stevens - D Lish.

Debbie and her business D Lish has been stocking Crafty Wee Birdie Gift Shop since the very start, way back in 2015! Her product range of handcrafted bags is hugely popular in our gift shop. We put this down to the great quality practical products she creates. The variety she offers is absolutely fantastic and her prices are so reasonable.

She also has a great eye for colour and pattern. Always coming up with fresh new designs.

Debbie lives in nearby Inverness which is great because she is always on call for top ups when we sell out of her gorgeous creations.

Where do you get the inspiration for your amazing projects?

My inspiration usually comes when I am on holiday, sitting relaxed in the sun with a chilled glass of vino!

Describe yourself in five words

Mum, Wife, dis-organised, dreamer!

How did you get into your craft?

I got into sewing as I used to go on and on about how I always wanted to study art at university and my husband arrived home one day with a sewing machine and told me to try and become what I had always wanted when I was younger. I had never used a sewing machine until that point.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My days are split between working for myself making bags and working as a delivery driver. I run after my son and my husband too much but don’t really mind as they are good to me in return.

What projects are you working on now?

My current projects are always bags, it’s just my thing!

Where do you create your work?

My sewing is all done from my craft room at home. I love it but when I am busy it does tend to get a bit messy.

What has been your favourite new product, design or discovery over the last year?

My fav new project over the last year was making headbands for NHS and frontline staff. I sent these around the UK to anyone who asked due to the elastic rubbing behind their ears. I think I donated about 400 of these and tried to use fabrics that matched with their uniforms.

What are your top tips for anyone looking to start crafting?

Top tips.... just try, don’t think you won’t be good enough. Practice, practice. Practice!

Debbie has been such a support to me and The Crafty Wee Birdie Gift Shop.

Always positive and with a smile on her face. Even after making all those face masks!!! She has made over 2000!! These have mainly been for folks in our local area but she has been sending them all over the UK as well as to Spain and New Zealand. She is an absolute superstar!!
